If you have a site that brings in 6000 visits a month, you should expect about a 10% click-through on the average. Some months it will be better, and others worse. I would guess it depends upon the content of the banner at times. With encourgement to use the banners you should get the click-through rate up a few points. If you also have a "pay per view banner", this will give you a gaurantee of some return. If you have for example 600 click throughs at $0.05 average, and 6000 views at $0.03 this will be 600 x .05 = $30.00 , and then you have 6000 x .03 = $180.00 . You can see that this can add up to a fair amount of money for one site! But if you don't get the traffic, you won't get the pay!!!
There are some banner companies that will want you to have them and nobody else advertizing on your site. Some will pay based on a complex formula that has a click-through to view ratio. All of these companies have some rules. It is necessary to shop around and find the deal and agreement that is best for your situation. In selecting a banner company it is best to visit other sites using banners and ask the site operators about the honesty and ethics of the banner companies on his site. The majority of these companies are okay. The advertizer may also have several hundred, or even several thousand different types of banners being constantly exposed. Your site must meet a good standard to be acceptable. When you apply, the advertizer will inform you of any outstanding requirments to be accepted. If you are also getting paid on a per view basis, then you will most likely be asked to have the banner visable without any scrolling as soon as the webpage is loaded.

To have a success of any type in selling on the net, the pricing will have to be very competitave, or you must have a product that the visitor cannot find anywhere else, and he or she wants it.
